Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday urged the government to make efforts to move 6,000 fishermen from Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts in Andhra Pradesh to safety. They have been stuck in Gujarat since the lockdown came into effect in March.
"Over 6,000 fishermen from AP, stranded in Gujarat, have been confined to their tiny fishing trawlers for over a month, in unhygienic conditions with limited food & water. I appeal to the Govt to move my brothers to relief camps and ensure their well being," the former Congress President today said, plugging a report.
"With their boats docked, they have no means of returning home and their future is uncertain. Now confined to their boats, many of the fishermen say that they have inadequate food supplies, coupled with poor hygiene and sanitation facilities, and non-payment of wages. They also say that the government is yet to shift them to state-run shelters," the report, published by The NewsMinute, says.
Recently, the issue was raised by Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan.
