The India fashion week here played host to Jassi, the star of the popular TV show that revolves around her inimitable character.

Popular television character Jassi, complete with trademark frumpy salwar kameez, thick librarian spectacles and shiny braces, appeared at the country's most extravagantly stylish event saying fashion is for everyone.

Jassi, who plays the lead role in Sony TV's hit show "Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin", arrived at a fashion party on Thursday night to promote the channel, one of the sponsors for this year's fashion week.

"I believe fashion is for everyone," said Jasmeet Walia or Jassi, whose real identity is not known though she is widely suspected to be former model Mona Singh.

As the liquor flowed around her and the crystals clinked merrily, the woman who has made plain looks a virtue, spoke quietly and confidently.

"More important than looks is the person within," said Jassi at the party at Delhi's The Grand Hotel, venue of the fifth fashion week. "That's what we often forget."

Perceived as a major risk by analysts, Jassi's fame has been the pitch on brains rather than beauty. Sony, with a major advertising blitzkrieg, pitched Jassi as every girl -- devoid of picture perfect looks but full of steady intelligence, compassion and lots of heart.

Her appearance at the fashion week, the Mecca of all things trendy and beautiful, is a bit of a contrast.

Her character as the secretary of an extremely fashion conscious boss is aimed at revealing the fallacies of outer appearance -- which, of course, is a platform of fashion. She, however, doesn't think so.

"I think my core point in the serial is that everyone is wonderful in their own way and if you scratch the surface, everyone has their good points."
