A 17-year-old teenager from Philadelphia has been arrested by the FBI and accused of planning a terrorist attack. The arrest took place in West Philadelphia on Friday after the teen was found to have communicated with a terror group linked to Al-Qaeda, as reported by the Independent.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, in a news conference, stated, "The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force's efforts potentially prevented a dangerous terrorist attack driven by a twisted ideology that does not represent the beliefs of the vast majority of peace-seeking individuals, including Muslims."

The charges against the teenager mark one of the most serious alleged terrorist activities seen in Philadelphia County court in recent history, according to Krasner. He emphasized the commitment to holding the individual accountable for the crimes and continuing to work closely with law enforcement partners to prevent acts of violence rooted in hate-driven ideologies.

The investigation revealed that the teenager had acquired chemicals and taken steps to construct a potential weapon of mass destruction. FBI Special Agent in Charge Jacqueline Maguire detailed the purchases of tactical equipment, wiring, chemicals, and items used as remote detonators. The teen had also begun assembling potential devices, indicating a significant level of planning.

The FBI's inquiry began when they became aware of the teen's communications with Katibat al Tawhid wal Jihad (KTJ), an al Qaeda-affiliated foreign terrorist organization. Over several weeks, the FBI tracked and investigated the teen, including surveillance activities.

Agent Maguire additionally disclosed that the teenager had access to a notable quantity of firearms. The charges brought against the teen include possession of a weapon of mass destruction, criminal conspiracy, arson, causing or risking catastrophe, attempt to commit criminal mischief, possession of a crime instrument, and reckless endangerment of another person. The case has been registered in juvenile court.
