With a sub-title (The Rajinikanth) that's enough to kindle the interest of the audience, debutant director Rajesh Kannan has come out with 'Perumaan', a film with newcomers Arjun and Sruthi in lead roles.

The smartness he has shown in conceiving the tagline is missing in the way he has narrated the film, for the script lacks the much needed pep to keep the audience engaged.

A 'suspense thriller', 'Perumaan' talks about a youth who is caught in a trap, in his bid to make it big in life. How he comes out of it forms the crux of the story.

Sakthi (Arjun) is a techie whose sole aim is to be as popular as Superstar Rajinikanth. And he feels that he needs bags of money to achieve his mission.

One day, Sakthi is given with an assignment to help an entrepreneur to legalize his black money. In the process, Sakthi is equipped with the currency he wanted. But it paves way for a whole new set of problems.

Arjun, despite being a newcomer, tries his best to come out with the right emotions. Sruthi doesn't have much scope to perform, while others in the cast are adequate.

Cinematographer C J Rajkumar attempts to add more suspense to the script with his lens, but in vain. Vikram Sarathy's background score fails to contribute anything big.

Agreed that Rajesh Kannan has presented an original story. But the pace in which the movie moves is too slow, something which he cannot afford in a suspense thriller.
