Kudos to AVM for rendering a family entertainer in Peralagan with right mix of action, romance and humor all through. Surya plays a dual role (a ugly looking youth with a hunch back and a bunny teeth and a handsome rough college student) and so is Jothika (a college girl and a rustic rural girl). The movie revolves around the 'ugly' man who leads a selfless life for others. Surya walks away with top honors playing the role. It's a revelation to see the actor daring to deface himself to play the role, probably taking the cue from Kamal Haasan and Vikram.
The story revolves around Suryaa village youth who is sympathized for his looks but is lauded for selfless service to others. He covers up his handicap with humor. Unmindful of his looks, Chinna goes around looking for a suitable bride with the help of his friend (Vivek). Brushing aside many an insult hurled at him, he carries on. In contrast to him is the other Surya, a rough college student who loves his classmate Jothika. She comes across Chinna, who assures her that he would get her married to the man of her heart but Jothika gets killed in a fracas involving a gangster. Meanwhile, the hunchback Surya comes across an orphaned poor blind girl (played by Jothika again). He wins over heart by helping her out. Thanks to his efforts, she gains her vision (the eyes of deceased Jothika are transplanted on her). This results in a tussle between both Suryas as to whom Jothika belongs to now. However, fearing his looks, the hunchback Surya decides to leave way for the other. But fate have different things for him.
Bhujji Babu, the make-up man, deserves all appreciation for the success of Surya's make-up. Yuvan Shankar Raja's tunes are catchy, especially the number Ambulimama. Cinematography is by R Rathnavelu and dialogues are by Singapuli. The movie is a remake of Malayalam hit Kunji Koonan played by Dillep. It tugs at your heart when Chinna gets snubbed but takes the snide
on his stride. Vivek and Surya evoke laughter whenever they appear on the screen.
Surya deserves appreciation for his astounding performance. He is at his best be it humor or action. The actior has scored a hat trick with Peralagan now following his Kaakha Kaakha and Pithamagan last year. After a long gap, Vivek has succeeded in evoking laughter. A tailor-made role for Vivek in which he really excels. Actress Malavika appear for a number. Also in the cast includes Manorama, Devan, T P Gajendran, a debutant Bobby and Muthukalai.
A laugh-riot family entertainer is sure to appease all.
