People have started to protest against the Airports Authority of India’s (AAI) plans to acquire lands for putting in place its runway extension plan so as to extend the length of the runway at the Trichy international Airport.
Work on construction of a new Terminal Building as well as extension of the existing runway is about to get underway at the Trichy International Airport. AAI had earlier approached the Govt. of Tamil Nadu to make available to it the land surrounding the Airport/runway to as to extend the runway for improving the services of the Airport.
Govt. of Tamil Nadu responded to the request by acquiring 356 acres of land surrounding the Airport and donating the same to the AAI.
However, women, youths including school and college students and office-goers sat in protest against the acquisition of residential localities to expand the runway. The protest was held at the Trichy-Pudukkottai Road a couple of days back.
