In May this year, a techie in reply to a Pakistani social media user's query what a hammer is called in India wrote "Suthiyal" and to further explain it posted a meme of Vadivelu's famous Contractor Nesamani from the 'Friends' movie who gets hit by a hammer. Then another user enquired if he was alright and the viral Pray for Nesamani hashtag started trending on Twitter and other social media platforms. While Tamils understood what the sensation was about many from all over the globe got curios and started searching for who is Nesamani.
Similarly an ad for the Peloton bikes in the US showed a young mother being overwhelmed by her husband gifting her one of the brand's exercise bikes and she works out on it to show him a video a year later that she has become fitter and thanks him for that. There was severe backlash from social media users that the ad was sexist and showed women in poor light that they are submissive of abuse from their men when pressurized to slim down.
Like our own Nesamani, the netizens spent sleepless nights for almost a week to identify who the then-infamous Peloton girl is. It was Hollywood superstar Ryan Reynolds who quickly found her and within 36 hours he filmed a commercial with her for his Aviation Gin brand. In the new ad Monica Ruiz is seen being comforted by her friends that everything will be alright while she down the whole glass of martini.
Monica Ruiz appeared on Television for the first time and expressed that in spite of the negative publicity and scathing remarks she is ok. She blamed her eyebrows for giving a worried look that should have triggered all the negativity against the Peloton ad which caused the company's stock to tumble 85 percent. The young actress is over the moon for her unexpected association with and meeting Reynolds and requested the public to see her as an actress who has done her job.
