Payal Tadvi, a 26-year-old second year post-graduate medical student at the BYL Nair Hospital, committed suicide in her hostel room after being mentally abused and harassed by three seniors. She stated in the note that it had become unbearable for her to continue. The suicide note was recovered by the forensic department on July 6.
The three accused, identified as Hema Ahuja, Bhakti Mehra, and Ankita Khandelwal, had discriminated Payal, who belonged to the marginalized Tadvi-Bhil community. Initially me and Snehal [Payal Tadvi's friend who gave her statement to crime branch] didn't come forward or said anything to anyone. The torture continued to the level that I could not bear. I complained against them [the accused doctors] but it had no result. I have lost my professional life, personal life, everything because it has been declared by them that they will not let me learn anything until they are in the hospital. I am prohibited from handling the labour room from last three weeks because they don't find me efficient. I have been asked to stay out of the labour room during OPD hours, her suicide note read.
She further added that she had lost hope for anything to change because she knew it won't. She also apologized to her parents for taking the drastic step. I am really sorry mum and dad to take away my own life. I know how much I mean to you all and also you are the world to me. But know at the stage it has become unbearable. I cannot stand a minute with them, Payal had written.
