Tuticorin Port Trust vice-chairman Natarajan has said that passenger ships would be operated within the next three months from Tuticorin Port to connect places such as Rameswaram and Kanniyakumari besides Trivandrum in Kerala.

Natrajan inaugurated a huge cargo-lifting facility at the Dakshin Bharat Cargo Yard at the Port Trust. With this, cargo facilities would be available twice in a week from Tuticorin Port up to Colombo Port in Sri Lanka.

“We are in the process of modernizing the cargo-handling capacity of the Port and would soon be implementing appropriate measures in this regard. Work to further deepen the sea upto 16 metres would conclude within the next three years after which major Ships would find it easy to dock at the Port,” he observed.

Natarajan also announced that small passenger ships would be operated from Tuticorin, within the next three months, connecting Kanniyakumari, Rameswaram and Kerala’s Trivandrum. “In the first phase, tenders have been called for from persons willing to operate these services; consultations would be held later and an action plan would be chalked out to commence the services by April,” he said.
