Mammootty has been always instrumental in encouraging young directors, granting them bulk dates for their projects .He got in return, the best works from them which always got translated into bigger Mammootty hits. This practical  thinking from the superstar  is all evident behind the success of films like `Saamrajyam', `Oru Maravathoor Kanavu', `Kaazhcha', `Big B', 'Thommanum Makkalum', `Rajamanikyam' to the latest 'Katha Parayumpol'.

Mammootty has eyed the directorial credibility of by M. Padmakumar even from the time he was busy as an associate director. His early films like `Ammakkilikoodu', `Vargam' and `Vasthavam' also displayed the big potential that Padmakumar holds as a director with brains and vision. After the critical success of' `Vasthavam' Mammootty immediately called Padmakumar and offered his dates for the film 'Parunthu' which has now  shaped up well and will reach the theatres in a matter of a couple of weeks.

The megastar is playing the role of Purushottaman, called by everyone as 'Blade' Purushu or `Parunthu' -the proprietor of Sree Muruka chit funds, a heartless financier who lends money on interest.  He is ruthless in his dealings with loan defaulters and never cares or believes in love, relationships and humanity.

Purushu who arrived at Kozhikkode as a small boy from Pazhani, is an orphan who   never trusts anyone, uses strong arm tactics and goes to any extent to recover his capital. Many times families have been ruined and relationships irreparably damaged by this business, which he maintains with his fighting spirit.

The only rival of Purushottaman in the city is Azeez, who runs calicut finance and real estates. Both were close friends in their childhood, but parted ways when they started separate firms.Very few people are close to Purushu which includes Mahendran, his right hand man and Kunjachchan, who earlier worked for Purushottaman's rival, but now, his most trusted associate.

At a point of time Purushu comes face to face with Rakhi, the daughter of a Gujarati-born businessman settled in Kozhikode (played by Jagathy Sreekumar).Purushu has already prevented her marriage from taking place, in the grounds that her father owes him some money. She decides to take on the 'Shylock' in Purushu and the story takes a different turn from that point. Some drastic happenings that happens back to back make Purushu realize that there is more to life than money. Purushottaman then tries to reform himself, but every member of the society around him was not in a mood to gave him a chance to become a better man.

It's after a very long time that   Mammootty is playing a negative hero and this time the super star was adamant   in presenting Purushu with the maximum negative traits.  The scriptwriter T A Razzaq has modeled many moneylenders that he actually met in his life in creating this character for Mammootty. And the director of `Parunthu' M Padmakumar who is pinning much hope on the movie   thinks that Mammootty has given a new look to the role, much different from his usual screen characters. Suraj Venjaramoodu appears as Mahendran while Cochin Haneefa becomes Kunjachchan. Jayasuriya plays a cameo as Vinayan while Lakshmi Rai is Rakhi.

Also in the cast are Devan,  Sreelatha, Sabitha ,Saiju Kurup, Mamukkoya, Abu Salim, Kalyani, Lakshana and Jayan. The movie is cinematographed by Mammootty specialist Sanjeev Shankar while Ranjan Abraham does the editing. The songs written for the movie by Vayalar Sharath Chandra Varma, Anil Panachooran and Kanesh Poonoor are set to music by Alex Paul. Boban is the art director and stills are by Sunil Guruvayur. The movie produced by Howly Pottoor under the banner of Dream Team will grace the theatres on July 18.
