'Parasite' Director Bong Joon Ho and Robert Pattinson's 'Mickey 17' Gets New Release Date for 2025

Warner Bros. has dated January 31, 2025, the release of Mickey 17, one of the most anticipated sci-fi movies directed by Bong Joon Ho and starring Robert Pattinson. Warner Bros. moved the film's release date from March 29, 2024, as part of schedule adjustments to allow for more production time, influenced by labor actions and other events from the previous year.

The new date also positions the film at the beginning of the Lunar New Year, a key moviegoing period around the world, and January is generally a slack season in terms of box-office activity. Previous commitments to other titles prevented Mickey 17 from debuting in IMAX.

This marks Bong's first feature since Parasite—the blockbuster that not only made history as the highest-grossing Korean film but also became the first non-English-language movie to take home the Best Picture Oscar. Bong is also producing through his company, Offscreen, with Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner from Plan B, and Dooho Choi of Kate Street Pictures.

Edward Ashton's novel from 2022, described as a high-concept cerebral thriller in the tradition of The Martian and Dark Matter, serves as the basis for the movie. Pattinson will play an expendable on a human expedition to colonize an ice planet who, refusing to let his replacement clone take his place, sparks a one-sided interstellar war. Other cast members include Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo, whose specific character details are being kept under wraps.
