Nandamuri Balakrishna who is on a high after his blockbuster 'Simha' last year, was determined to recreate the box office magic with 'Paramaveera Chakra' this time. A 150th directorial venture by veteran director Dasari Narayana Rao, 'PVC' is in many ways similar to Bobbili Puli and Major Chandrakanth, movies that  N T Rama Rao played the lead in a few years ago. Infact, the story of Paramaveera Chakra begins where NTR's Bobbili Puli ends. PVC begins with NTR's dialogues from 'Bobbili Puli'. NTR is animated to give a few dialogues to Jayasudha in the first scene of the film.

Story

Jayasudha is inspired by her brother N T Rama Rao who is an ex army major. He is sentenced to death as he kills a few goons in the society. As he exits the court room he tells Jayasudha that he might be reborn as Bobbili Puli in the form of the child in her womb. Chakradhar(Balakrishna) is the son of Jayasudha who is an actor. Jayasudha who dreams of seeing him as army major doesn't like him acting in films and doesn't pay attention to his stardom. One day while Chakradhar is on the sets, a bunch of army officials come to narrate a story for him to act.Colnel Jitendra(Murali Mohan) narrates the story of Major Jayasimha to Chakradhar where Jayasimha slaps ministers who don't respect national anthem, beats up former defense minister's son who kidnaps army jawan's sister( Ameesha Patel) and his heroic way of tackling terrorist Shafi.Jitendra asks Chakradhar to come with him to border area for a couple of days for him to finish the rest of the story. Since, Chakradhar likes the story immensely, he decides to go with him. Once he reaches the Himalayan glaciers, he is taken to a secret place to meet Brigadier Kumar(Vijay Kumar). The twist of the story comes when Chakdradhar gets to see Major Jayasimha(Balakrishna) in that secret place but in a comma stage. The rest of the story is on what happened to Major Jayasimha, who is responsible for his condition, who are the real culprits and how Chakradhar who resembles Major Jayasimha unviels the secret.

Performances

Balakrishna's energy levels are fabulous in this film. He dances at ease even for steps that are fast paced. He proved that mythological charecters are his family's forte while he plays the role of Komaram Bheem and Ravana as an actor in this film. His dialogues are short and powerful. The army major look suited him well and he is convincing at every scene in this movie.Sheila had nothing much to do and ditto with Amisha Patel. They did a good job in those few scenes they got to be seen.Murali Mohan and Vijay Kumar did justice to their charecters. However, Vijay Chander looked too old to be an army officer. His dialogue modulation was too pale to sound like an army officer. Neha Dhupia plays a short charecter in the second half of the movie and has a song in which she looks a million bucks. Her swim suit appearance in this film balances the other sentimental and melodramatic scenes in the movie. Bramhandam, Ali and Hema manage to tickle the funny bones with their 'Robot' comedy sequences.Jayasudha  doesn't have more than three scenes to act in.

Remarks

Everyone who liked NTR's 'Major Chandrakanth' and 'Bobbili Puli' will like this film. It has Balayya in several get ups in just two and a half hours. He is seen as Ravana, Komaram Bheem, army major and an actor. Balakrishna is seen in almost every scene of this film excepting in comedy sequences between Bramhanandam and Ali. He runs the show completely. The dialogues and the music are the soul of this film.Manisharma's ear soothing music clubbed with exotic locations of Newzealand where the songs were choregographed with foreigners as background dancers is an asset to this movie. There are a few glitches in the film  which are glaring. Balakrishna's wig is clearly visible in several close shots and his make up is pathetic. Besides, Balayya kills a lot of terrorists with swords and knife which is too cinematic to believe. The song 'Thalli Kadupulo' with army as backdrop gives everyone goose bumps and is one of the best patriotic songs shot in Telugu cinema. The screenplay is impressive and cinematography is laudable. The story is predictable but the narration makes it interesting to watch. The money spent on making this film is visible in every shot, costume and fight sequence.Rajnikanth's Robot movie songs are generously used in this  movie's comedy scenes with Ali and Bramhanandam.

Verdict

Balakrishna has managed to deliever a watchable entertainer yet again this year. It is an honest movie with minor glitches that can be ignored. One of the good patriotic movies with a nice blend of commercial elements in it. Balakrishna's Parama Veera Chakra is not only for fans but also for audience. He is sure to emerge as the Sankranti hero with this film.
