Kamal Haasan has opined that pan-India movies have always been made since the 1960s. In his latest interview, the legendary actor named a few Bollywood titles, including the classic 'Mughal-e-Azam', to drive home his point. The 'Vishwaroopam' actor stated that India is a unique country where people converse in multiple languages.

The 'Indian 2' actor said that Shantaram did pan-India films, and that 'Padosan' was pan-India. "What do you call 'Mughal-e-Azam'? It's a pan-India film for me. It's nothing new. Our country is unique. Unlike America, we speak different languages but we are united. That's the beauty of this country," PTI has quoted Kamal as saying.

But Kamal and other commentators who say that pan-India films have always existed must know that rare occurrences matter but they are not the same as a regular phenomenon. Mani Ratnam's films were pan-India in the 1990s but just because someone makes three such films in a decade, it doesn't mean much. Today's times are different. Since 'Baahubali: The Beginning', there have been at least five real pan-India hits (read 'Baahubali 2', 'Pushpa', 'RRR' and the 'KGF' movies). And multiple mega-budgeted pan-India movies are being made by Telugu cinema today. This has never happened in the history of Indian cinema.
