Though the United Nations’ Security Council (UNSC) had made it clear in the past that it won’t mediate between India and Pakistan in resolving the Kashmir dispute, Pakistan once again raked up the issue of mediation last week.
The Council was deliberating on the uncertainty prevailing in Central East Asian countries. Pakistan’s Ambassador to United Nations Maleeha Lodhi likened Kashmir issue to the Palestinian crisis when she said “Pakistan would continue to support the justifiable expectations of Palestinian people, who have been living under external aggression, similar to the people of Kashmir.”
“United Nations should discharge its responsibility by mediating in long-standing disputes such as the Kashmir issue and the Palestinian crisis so that people and countries across the world don’t lose hope in its effective functioning,” she said.
The U.N. had made it clear only a few days back that it was aware of the increasing ‘tension’ along the Line of Control (India’s border with Pakistan) but only the two countries ought to negotiate and sort out the issue among themselves. “The possibility of the United Nations mediating in the issue is ruled out,” it said.
