Just days after the country began allowing commercial flights to resume, a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight carrying at least 91 passengers and 7 crew members, crashed near Jinnah International Airport, Karachi, on Friday. The flight which was on its way from Lahore to Karachi, was approaching for a landing when it crashed near the airport.
"The plane crashed in Karachi. We are trying to confirm the number of passengers but initially it is 99 passengers and eight crew members," said Abdul Sattar Khokhar, the spokesman for the country's aviation authority, adding that the flight was coming from Lahore.
Eyewitnesses say that a cloud of black smoke was seen from afar at the crash site. As the flight was crashed above the residential area the loss of life in the residential colony is also probable.
The flight crashed near model town residential area. Witnesses say multiple homes destroyed. PK 303 was coming from Lahore to #Karachi. It reportedly crashed just before landing, cause unknown yet. CAA officials think survivors unlikely.@AJEnglish pic.twitter.com/j4JO9rce49
