On Friday night, India scored a "diplomatic victory" by securing the support of the US and France over Kashmir. Russia, despite its neutral stance, backed India. China and the UK went against India.
As things stand, the UNSC is not going to take up the issue of Kashmir. Pakistan wants to internalize the issue to India's detriment. But it has been a diplomatic disaster for it, with the European Union and other countries showing no interest in internationalizing the issue.
Analysts are of the view that India's economic strength is why it gets respect in the international arena. "As long as we grow at 6.5 percent or thereabouts every year, our bargaining power will remain intact," a commentator says.
At the same time, India should take steps to "expose Pakistan's atrocities," says Gaurav Sawant. "Pak's record in Gilgit & Baltistan must be talked about. Pakistan had changed their demographic profile and in rest of Pak Occupied Kashmir too. And show China a mirror for Uighur province & Hong Kong. Must stare the bullies down. J&K is ours. Part of it in illegal Pak control," he adds.
