"Oxford University students vote to BAN beef and lamb from campus canteens," said the headline of Daily Mail, a prominent UK-based publication. Ever since, the University's decision has come in for praise from several quarters, including from a section of vocal social media users in India. The beef ban resonates with the sentiment of veganism and anti-climate change ideology.

The University's students have asked authorities to implement the ban (voted with a two-thirds majority) in order to combat climate change. In the past, Cambridge University had banned beef. The Goldsmiths and the University of London, too, have got similar bans.

The meat industry is one of the major causes of global warming, a number of commentators welcoming the ban have said. Many in India want similar progressive stances on campuses.
