Osmania University professor Ch Khasim was on Saturday arrested by Telangana police in a case pertaining to the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. The case has been pursued by the police since at least 2017.
As per the police, "incriminating evidence" has been found in Khasim's house on the OU campus. The evidence suggests that he used to have correspondence with Maoist party leadership. The police had chanced upon evidence related to Khasim when a Maoist party courier committed an accident and fled from the scene three years ago. It was an accidental discovery.
The professor's wife, Snehalatha, has alleged that her husband has been targeted only because he has been speaking out against caste discrimination and other ills afflicting Telangana. She also said that the police today forced their way into their residence and resorted to the ransacking of books in the name of searching the house.
