The Madras High Court has announced that it is not mandatory for those driving motor vehicles to carry original driving licences.
A few days ago, the rule to carry original driving licenses was made mandatory. City police had announced strict action against anyone not carrying them original licenses from September 1.
Traffic` Ramasamy had petitioned against the rule, to which Chief Justice Indira Banerjee asked, “What is the difficulty in carrying the original driving licence?”
K Aswin, State co-ordinator of Justice for Denials Association, had filed a PIL, pointing out that there was no such stipulation in the Motor Vehicles Act, and that it was absurd to assume that carrying the original license will reduce the number of road accidents.
