Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson faced criticism over the People’s Fund of Maui, which aids those affected by Hawaiian wildfires. They initially contributed $10 million and encouraged public donations. Critics questioned why they didn't fully fund it themselves.

Winfrey addressed the backlash on CBS Mornings, emphasizing the fund's goal: helping Maui's people. Initially, she provided material assistance like generators and towels but found locals desired more control. Inspired by Dolly Parton's Tennessee fund after the 2017 wildfires, they decided to give money directly to people. The infrastructure for this process was established through numerous Zoom meetings.

They began with $10 million to kickstart the fund, welcoming others to contribute. However, they faced online vitriol. Despite this, Winfrey believes the idea is strong, providing a platform for those who want to help.

The People’s Fund of Maui aims to empower wildfire victims by distributing funds directly into their accounts. While initial backlash occurred, Winfrey and Johnson remain committed to supporting Maui's recovery.
