Opposition parties against reducing duration of winter session of Parliament

Opposition parties such as the Trinamool Congress and the Party of India have expressed their ‘disappointment’ at the BJP-led Centre’s proposal to reduce the duration of the ensuing winter session of Parliament.
The winter session of Parliament usually commences during mid-November to last for a month or so. In the meantime, reports emanating from the national capital say that the ruling BJP at the Centre was contemplating reducing the duration of the winter session so as to give parties enough time to campaign for the upcoming Assembly polls in Gujarat which are to be held in two phases on 09th and 14th December.
A top-ranking official of the Lok Sabha Secretariat, who apparently didn’t want to be named, is said to have spilled the beans about the Centre’s plans to reduce the duration (to 10 days) of the winter session. Opposition parties, which have sensed it, have now openly expressed their disappointment at the very idea of reduction of duration of the winter session of Parliament.
While wondering why the Centre hasn’t yet announced the duration of the winter session of Parliament, Trinamool Congress M.P. Derek O’Brien said that his party would never agreed to reduction in duration of the session. Communist Party of India’s D. Raja was also of the same opinion. “The Parliament is not in session even for 100 days in a year; in such a scenario, it won’t be proper to reduce the duration of the winter session,” he asserted.
