Christopher Nolan's latest film, "Oppenheimer," has been enjoying significant success at the Indian box office since its Friday release. The biopic, depicting physicist J Robert Oppenheimer's life and work during World War II, has earned close to ₹50 crore nett during its opening weekend. Surprisingly, Oppenheimer's performance has even surpassed that of "Barbie" in the Indian market.
The movie delves into Oppenheimer's role as the Father of the Atomic Bomb, revealing his moral dilemmas during the creation of nuclear weapons. Despite understanding the devastating consequences, he persisted in pushing the button to test the atomic bomb.
According to early estimates from Sacnilk.com, Oppenheimer raked in ₹17.25 crore net on its third day of release in India across all languages. The film earned ₹14.50 crore on its opening day and ₹17.25 crore on the second day, bringing its total earnings to ₹49 crore. Oppenheimer's theatrical debut coincided with the release of "Barbie," leading to a noteworthy clash of Hollywood summer blockbusters.
Starring Cillian Murphy as J Robert Oppenheimer, Emily Blunt as Katherine Oppenheimer, and Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves, the movie boasts a star-studded cast, including Robert Downey Jr, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Casey Affleck, and Josh Hartnett.
In North America, Oppenheimer grossed $80.5 million, while Barbie brought in $155 million, resulting in an unexpected pop-culture phenomenon and a much-needed boost for struggling theaters amidst the pandemic and the rise of streaming services.
