Omicron-induced coronavirus infections are resulting in increased hospitalizations of children in New York, reports are saying. As per Western media reports, the New York State Department of Health has warned that there will be an upward trend in pediatric hospitalizations in the coming days.
A report by LA Times yesterday stated that 50% of the hospitalized children are younger than 5 and ineligible for vaccination in the US. About 75% of those hospitalized are aged 12 to 17 and they were not fully vaccinated. And 100% of those hospitalized are aged 5 to 11 and were not fully vaccinated.
Another media report said that pediatric hospitalizations are up 395% in New York City compared to last month.
There is a view that children, who are not covered by vaccination, are at the receiving end of Omicron. Commenting on the development, Dr. Jacob Glanville said, "There are papers now in review concluding that Omicron is more mild (less likely to hospitalize the infected) but the glaring exception is in children under 5. They seem more prone to hospitalization from Omicron."
