"OMG 2" , the follow-up to the movie that made a whole lot of money at the 2012 box office in the shape of “OMG – Oh My God!” arrives, this time aiming to explore a sensitive but important subject with equal parts humor and social commentary. Far from its predecessor’s take on organized religion, “OMG 2” explores the world of Indian parenting as it addresses the generational disconnect when it comes to discussing physical intimacy.
The movie is all about Kanti played by Pankaj Tripathi. He is a person who worships Lord Shiva, gets himself involved with some kind of legal ordeal after getting his teenage son to the status of a victim of bullying and shaming at school owing to some incident related to masturbation. With courage and determination, Kanti takes on the school that arises from baseless grounds in an entertaining courtroom drama unravelling into a legal case taken up by Kanti before defending him legally. The film introduces Kamini played by Yami Gautam as the defense lawyer. Later , she becomes an integral part in joining Kanti’s struggle for justice.
“OMG 2” deserves some applause for its effort on talking about a sensitive issue and encouraging open discussions around physical intimacy. The progressive outlook of the movie as well as poignant lines, makes it important to talk about sex education as well as communication within the families. Focused director Amit Rai keeps the narrative in line with each other through strong impacts on this central theme that is kept alive throughout.
Pankaj Tripathi heads the show with a mesmerizing performance and carries the film on his shoulders. Akshay Kumar gives an extended cameo that bears some memorable results while Tripathi effortlessly draws one's attention in his intricate portrayal of the character. The courtroom debates form part of enjoyable entertainment as they capture how well he directs his dialogues for his character.
However, that does not mean the film doesn't have its own flaws. At times, realism and convenience don't mix well together or some parts feel too forced to make an impact. And also, connecting Kanti with Lord Shiva's devotee feels less convincing than how it was done in the original movie. Even so, "OMG 2" successfully communicates through itself its core message above all else.
The need for sex education is emphasized and underlined how ancient Hinduism’s understanding of physical intimacy could add to modern society in the film. Some technical aspects like visual effects, background score could have been polished but the adventure a ensemble cast takes on mounts as well as the control over the material shows that “OMG 2” is a modern tribute to an ancient wisdom.
In conclusion, “OMG 2” takes a brave step into exploring an important subject through an entertaining narrative. It may not be perfect, but it certainly sparks conversations and provides a new take on an essential part of human life.
Verdict: A Humorous and Thought-Provoking Blend of Comedy and Social Commentary
