The tragic news of a massive train accident shatters the entire nation last night. A horrific three-train collision happened in Odisha's Balasore. The Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, and a goods train crashed with each other.

The accident resulted in a death toll of 288 (last known status) and left more than 850 people injured. This is one of the worst train accidents in India. In 1999, 285 were killed in an Assam train accident and in 1981, the nation's deadliest railway accident occurred when a train plunged off a bridge and into a river in Bihar state, killing an estimated 800 people.

The state's Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has declared one-day state mourning. Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the incident and announced a compensation of ₹2 lakhs for the family of the dead and ₹50,000 for the injured from the PM's National Relief Fund (PMNRF). The state governments are invested in rescuing the passengers with the help of railway boards.

The Coromandel Express is believed to be derailed on the opposite tracks, which caused the collision. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a one-day state mourning. He stated that a compensation of ₹5 lakhs and ₹1 lakh will be provided to the deceased and injured people of Tamil Nadu in this accident respectively. He cancelled all the centenary celebrations of former Chief Minister Karunanidhi.
