Four nurses employed at the newborn care unit of the district headquarters hospital of Malkangiri in Odisha, have been given show cause notices after TikTok videos they took inside the hospital came to light. The nurses Nandini Ray, Ruby Ray, Tapasi Biswas, and Jyoti Ray, were seen wearing their uniforms in the video, lip-syncing to Hindi songs. One video even featured a newborn baby in which the little child was carried by a nurse as a song played in the background.

Malkangiri chief district medical officer Dr. Ajit Mohanty said, “The nurses admitted to shooting the video clips inside the newborn care unit. In a hospital and that too in a special ward for newborn babies, such things are prohibited. I am now inquiring into the incident and will recommend necessary penal action to the health secretary.” He also mentioned that their contracts may be terminated if deemed necessary. Show cause notices which have been given to the nurses, are orders that require individuals to explain or ‘show cause’ why disciplinary action should not be taken against them based on certain incidents.

Madhusudan Mishra, former president of Odisha Medical Services Association (OMSA) said, "Cell phones, which pose radiation hazards, should not be taken inside the SNCU as very delicate newborns are admitted there. This is a serious violation of work ethics and rules. Strict action should be taken against all those responsible." This incident is another evidence of the negative impact of TikTok, possibly putting the lives of the babies at risk as well as leading to the chance of loss of livelihood for those involved.
