Currently, the COVID cases in Kerela are at a new peak after the government announced relaxations in the substantial lockdown due to the Onam festival. 45,352 cases were reported in India yesterday and out of this 32,097 cases are from Kerala. The case count on September 2 is the new highest number of cases reported on a single day in this new wave.
Meanwhile, in Kerela's Thrissur district, a nurse risked her life to coronavirus and saved a baby infected with COVID-19. Sreeja is a palliative care nurse associated with the family health centre in the Nenmanikkara Panchayat of Puthukkad in Thrissur. Her timely artificial respiration has brought a three-year-old child back to life.
A young woman, who is Sreeja's neighbour, brought her three-year-old baby in an unconscious state to Sreeja on Sunday. The child had almost collapsed after frequent vomiting and respiratory distress. The neighbour left the baby with the nurse and went to call her husband.
But Sreeja realised that the baby's critical condition and needed to be resuscitated immediately as there is no time to wait for hospital help. She gave the child a mouth-to-mouth resuscitation without worrying about any infection risk. After Sreeja gave artificial respiration the child was rushed to the nearest hospital.
When the doctors at the hospital treated the child, they said that the timely artificial respiration given by the nurse saved the baby. Everyone heaved a sigh of relief and was overwhelmed by Sreeja's act. The child was discharged from the hospital after two days, is now hale and hearty.
Sreeja is now in quarantine as the child was found positive for COVID-19 during hospital tests. She said that she had done the artificial respiration although there is a risk of being infected with the coronavirus. For Sreeja, there's nothing more satisfying than saving a life.
