Massive fire destroys twelfth century Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris

On Monday a popular landmark of Paris the Notre Dame Cathedral was feared destroyed by a raging fire as the roof collapsed. The monumental structure belongs to the 12th century and has stood there for close to a millennium. It is said that the cause of the fire could be attributed to the renovation work that is going on and art lovers are worried that the extensive artworks that are housed in the building could be lost forever.
Authorities have asked people around the area to stay away and the locals are sad that this tragedy happened at the time of Easter which would have been celebrated there. However, no casualties have been reported.
The Notre Dame Cathedral features prominently in Victor Hugo's famous novel "The Hunchback of Notre Dam' which has been made into films several times over the years.
