Noted South Indian singer, Kalyani Menon passed away at a private hospital in Chennai on Monday. The 80-year-old was undergoing treatment at the hospital following paralysis a brief while ago. She is survived by her son Rajeev Menon, who is a popular film director in the south.
Kalyani Menon debuted into Malayalam playback singing in 1973 with the Thoppil Basi-directed movie “Ambal”. Her famous Malayalam songs include Pavanarachezhuthunnu, Rithubedakal Vann, Jalsheyayil, and Thalirambili. She was a regular presence in South Indian movies, including Tamil and Telugu as well. Kalyani forayed into Tamil movies - 1979 Shivaji Ganeshan starrer 'Nallathoru Kudumbam'. In the nineties, she sang several famous songs under the direction of AR Rahman. She last sang in the 2018 Vijaysethupathi-Trisha starrer '96'.
