In one of the rarest of rare instances for Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader cried and apologized to the people of the country for his failure to stand by them during the pandemic period.
Pictures of Kim Jong-un removing his glasses and wiping off his tears at the 75th birth anniversary of his ruling party in Pyongyang's Kim II-sung Square have surfaced online. Speaking at a military parade, Kim Jong-un apologized for his regime's failure to improve the lives of the country's poverty-stricken citizens and apparently begged for their forgiveness. "Our people have placed trust, as high as the sky and as deep as the sea, in me, but I have failed to always live up to it satisfactorily. I am really sorry for that. Although I am entrusted with the important responsibility to lead this country upholding the cause of the great comrades Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il thanks to the trust of all the people, my efforts and sincerity have not been sufficient enough to rid our people of the difficulties in their lives (translated)," the North Korean leader reportedly said.
During the speech, he also promised to unleash his military equipments if threatened by another country (the United States of America, presumably). Expressing his willingness to resume exchanges with rival country South Korea after the pandemic subsides, Kim Jong-un added, "We will continue to strengthen our war deterrence capability, so as to deter all kinds of risky attempts and threats — including nuclear threats that are being constantly aggravated by hostile forces. But if any forces try to use their military power against us, I will preemptively mobilize our most powerful offensive force and punish them."
