The Visakhapatnam DCP East has been quoted as saying by The Week that there is NO second round of gas leakage as has been reported by sections of media. A few Telugu TV channels are ostensibly resorting to sensationalism.
"The entire population of Venkatapuram village, numbering around 1500, evacuated. Around 250 in hospital. 70 being treated for mild to severe conditions," the DCP has been quoted as saying by journalist Rahul Devulapalli.
It's believed that the gas leak happened from two 5,000 tonne tanks at the LG Polymers unit in the wee hours of Thursday. "The tanks had been unattended since March due to the ongoing lockdown. It led to a chemical reaction and the heat produced inside the tanks has caused the leakage," the ACP of West Zone Visakhapatnam has been quoted as saying.
The NewsMinute has reported that "authorities are still at work to ensure that any release of vapours from the 2,000 kilolitre tank in the factory is fully contained".
Meanwhile, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation has started blowing water through mist blowers to reduce the impact of the leak.
