As B Gopal's 1991 film Assembly Rowdy completes 25 years today, Mohan Babu has made a controversial statement. Saying that the film had faced criticism for its title, and even protests that saw the posters being burnt, the Manchu actor recalled that the then Speaker of Andhra Pradesh Assembly Dharma Rao watched and praised the film.
Saying that late NT Rama Rao had backed the film before its release, the Padma Sri actor said that since it was not an NTR government, the film didn't receive a State award. "In any case, cinema is about business. When we make a film, we want money and fame. Who would want an award?" Mohan Babu said.
Counted among one of the major hits in the Manchu actor's career, the film went on to become a big hit, running in some centres for a whopping 25 weeks.
Written by P Vasu (the film was a remake of the 1990 Tamil film Velai Kidaichuduchu), Paruchuri Brothers' screenplay was a major highlight. Late Divya Bharti's fans only grew in number after this film.
