Recently, several media reports said that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has recommended the introduction of an 11-digit mobile number system across the country. As per a clarificatory note from TRAI, no such recommendation has been made.
"The country will continue to follow 10-digit numbering for mobile services. We have categorically rejected shifting to a 11-digit numbering plan," the TRAI said.
Prefixing zero before a mobile phone number might be made mandatory in the near future. "While making a call from a fixed line number to a mobile number, a dialing prefix ('0') has been recommended. This change in dialing pattern will generate 2544 million additional numbering resources for mobile services to cater to the future requirements," the regulatory authority added.
