A death warrant has been issued for the four convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case by a Delhi court. The execution is scheduled to happen on January 22 at 7 am in Tihar jail.
Additional Sessions Judge Satish Kumar Arora, who reportedly issued the death warrants, has said that the convicts can use their legal remedies within 14 days. The 23-year-old victim, who was named Nirbhaya (fearless), was brutally raped, tortured with an iron rod, and murdered on a moving bus as she was returning home from south Delhi with a friend after watching a movie on the night of December 16, 2012. The vicious crime, that shook the nation and is still etched on people's minds, saw massive protests from across the entire country.
Reacting to the court order, Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi has said, "The execution of the four convicts will empower the women of the country. This decision will strengthen the trust of people in the judicial system. "While Nirbhaya's father has stated that it has been a long journey and that he is happy with the verdict.
The four death row convicts are Mukesh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Singh, and Pawan Gupta. The chairperson of Delhi Commission of Women (DCW), Swati Maliwal, has said, "It's a victory for every citizen of the country, I salute the mother who kept fighting for the past seven years. I would also like to thank the judges. Such rapists should be brought to justice in six months."
