15 children in New York have reportedly been hospitalized with a mysterious inflammatory syndrome. The doctors are yet to determine the cause of the illness, although they believe that it could be linked with Covid-19.
According to the New York City Health Department, children aged between 2 and 15 have been hospitalized with features of toxic shock from April 17 to May 1. The children, who have had symptoms of fever, rash, abdominal pain, vomiting, or diarrhoea, have been admitted to paediatric intensive care units (PICUs) with cardiac/respiratory support. Some of the patients required mechanical ventilation while over half of them required blood pressure support. Four of them have tested positive for Covid-19 and no fatalities have been reported. Officials are currently investigating the incomprehensible syndrome. A World Health Organization scientist stated during a news briefing last week, There are some recent rare descriptions of children in some European countries that have had this inflammatory syndrome, which is similar to the Kawasaki syndrome, but it seems to be very rare. New York City Health commissioner Oxiris Barbot mentioned in a statement, Even though the relationship of this syndrome to Covid-19 is not yet defined, and not all of these cases have tested positive for Covid-19 by either DNA test or serology, the clinical nature of this virus is such that we are asking all providers to contact us immediately if they see patients who meet the criteria we've outlined.
Pediatricians across America and Europe have requested families whose children have high fever, rashes, stomach pains, or symptoms related to the illness to call doctors immediately. Some of them have expressed concerns that parents might not take their children to the hospitals at present due to the coronavirus pandemic.
