Piracy in the form of illegal camera recordings from theatres and later circulating on the internet via torrents or various download modes and via CDs and DVDs cost the film and entertainment industry huge losses every year, and so far there has been no concrete measure taken to stop the illegal industry.

Now a technology firm named Ogilvy has joined hands with Focus Film Media, which is a part of Focus Media Group and has developed an innovative new way to combat piracy at the source itself. This technology named as ‘Piracy Blockr’, uses a conventional, age-old technology in TV remote controls and many gadgets, and makes use of infrared light and creates a watermark on any illegally filmed footage.

This watermark on the filmed footage renders it useless to sell, but does not have any effect on the other theatre viewers experience of the film. This technology if put to use can save the film industry from crores of losses. Regarding Piracy Blockr, Jason Jiang, the Founder and Chairman of Focus Media Group said “We are delighted to have gone beyond a conventional approach and develop the ‘Piracy Blockr,’ which allows us to address the problem in a discrete but effective way, ensuring that the film industry is protected for years to come.”
