A day after the resignation of Urjit Patel, the Centre has appointed economist Shaktikanta Das as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.

A well-respected mind in official circles, Das was a member of the Fifteenth Finance Commission of India in the past.

Das comes with a hands-on experience in macro-economic matters. He served as the secretary at the Department of Economic Affairs in the Ministry of Finance.

His term is 3 years.

There is already criticism against his appointment. He is said to be a yes-man of Arun Jaitley. "Shaktikanta Das who has the most unremarkable tenure as Secy in finance ministry is RBI Governor. He is close to Jaitley and will not need to call an RBI board meeting to give Centre whatever it asks for," MK Venu tweeted out.
