Depression and anxiety while having to stay at home amid the nationwide coronavirus lockdown has caused a man in the national capital to attempt suicide by jumping off an overbridge at the Outer Ring Road near West Enclave.
During highway patrol duty, a group of policeman noticed the man, identified as Harjeet Singh from Tilak Nagar, hanging off the bridge and screaming. They immediately rushed to his rescue and managed to get hold of him and pull him in. "The picket staff deployed at West Enclave also kept a municipal corporation truck below the bridge to save his life in case the man slips," officials reportedly stated. Following investigation, they further added that the man had been upset over growing fights with his wife during the lockdown, which led him to take the extreme step. The couple reportedly have a son together.
In an attempt to contain the spread of the virus across the country, PM Narendra Modi imposed a nationwide lockdown that came into effect on March 25 at 12.00 am and was initially enforced for 21 days. The lockdown was further extended on April 14 by two weeks until May 3.
