Elon Musk Announces Neuralink's First Human Patient Fully Recovers, Controls Mouse with Thoughts

Elon Musk, the founder of Neuralink, said Monday that the first implanted human patient of a brain chip from the startup is fully recovered and now able to control a computer mouse using his thoughts.
On X, Musk shared the upbeat news at a social media event, saying that the patient is still in good health with no negative side effects from the implant and that he can move a computer mouse on a screen just by thinking.
The overarching goal for Neuralink now is to increase the maximum number of mouse button clicks the patient can get. Neuralink successfully implanted its brain chip in its first human patient last month, following approval to start human trial recruitment back in September. The procedure involves a robot that places an implant for a brain-computer interface in the movement-intention area of the brain.
The first goal is to enable people to control a computer cursor or keyboard with their thoughts. Musk has grand ambitions for Neuralink, seeing it as a way to perform rapid surgical insertions of chip devices to treat a range of conditions, including obesity, autism, depression, and schizophrenia.
But even as things move, Neuralink has been faulted in the past for safety protocols. Reuters reported last month that the company received a fine for violating U.S. Department of Transportation rules on the movement of hazardous materials.
