An 85 year old woman named K Kamalathal has been celebrated by people of Vadivelampalayam near Coimbatore, for her unique service of selling idlis for just Re 1. Kamalathal has been doing the service for the past 40 years, and is serving people even during the tough times of the corona lockdown.
People of the area call her fondly as "Idli Paati" and "Paatima", and with the restrictions due to lockdown, as of now, people from Vadivelampalayam alone come to eat idlis from her shop. In the lockdown phase, despite her economic losses, kamalathal has been unmindful of her issues and is working with the motive of serving the needy.
The last time Kamalathal raised the price of idlis was before 15 years when she raised the price of idlis from 50 paise to 1 rupee. Recently, she had interacted with DMK President MK Stalin, who helped her by arranging essentials to support her, and the Bharathiar University and members of Hindustan Scouts and Guides also gave her grocery and essentials. Kamalathal became a sensation last year, when Anand Mahindra shared her video and tweeted he would like to help her by buying an LPG stove.
