On Wednesday, President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the Motera Stadium in Gujarat's Ahmedabad. It's the world's largest stadium, which has been rechristened to Narendra Modi Stadium.
Speaking at the inaugural, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the Prime Minister had started the Khelo Gujarat campaign and several other sports initiatives, showing his persistent keenness on sports. "Narendra Modi Stadium is the world’s largest sports stadium and not just cricket, with a seating capacity of 1.32 lakh (sic)," he added.
However, many are accusing Modi of being narcissistic. "BJP supporters criticized Mayawati when she built statues of herself during her reign as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. But when Modi has named a stadium after himself, they are defending him." This is the summary of the criticism.
The BJP, on its part, is justifying the decision. "28 sports tournaments, awards & trophies named after members of Nehru-Gandhi family. 19 stadium named after the members of the Nehru-Gandhi family. Same party people are rattled when merely '1' stadium has been named after Narendra Modi Ji which was his vision & brainchild," wrote Y Satya Kumar, the National Secretary of the BJP.
