Netizens oppose Vijay Raazs casting as a transgender in Gangubai Kathiawadi

When the trailer of Alia Bhatt's 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' finally came out on Friday, fans were impressed by the performance of the cast and Bhansali's unconventional take on the Mumbai underworld. Apart from Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgan, one performer that stood out the most was Vijay Raaz who was seen playing the character of Razia Bai, a transgender madam of a brothel and rival of Gangubai.

Several fans were amazed by Vijay's performance and lauded the actor on social media. One wrote, "After watching this trailer one thing has been proved that Vijay Raaz is one of the best actors in our times. His entry really gives goosebumps." However, there was a group of people which didn't appreciate Vijay's casting as they believed that the role should've gone to a real transgender actor.

A tweet in this favor read, "Can Bollywood stop casting cis/straight people as transsexual characters, please? It's 2022 already and I am pretty sure that there is enough talent in this country where an actual transsexual can portray a transsexual character." A comment on Reddit regarding this matter read, “It's about representation and opportunities, trans people are a minority and are hardly shown in media, they don't get a chance to play even the roles written about them."

'Gangubai Kathiawadi' is going to release theatrically on 25th of February.
