American streaming platform Netflix is currently testing charging a fee to subscribers who share their accounts with people who live outside their houses. The move from Netflix comes even as the company’s subscriber numbers continue to condense.

Netflix’s director of product innovation Chengyi Long, in a blog post, wrote, “We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans. While these have been hugely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared. As a result, accounts are being shared between households - impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members.”

Through the test, Netflix will start letting standard-plan and premium-plan customers add accounts for up to two people they don’t live with for an extra monthly charge. These extra members will reportedly have their own profiles, personalized recommendations, and logins and passwords. As of now, Netflix has launched the test in three countries - Peru, Costa Rica, and Chile - where subscribers will get prompts to add an extra viewer to their package at a discounted price of CLP 2,380 (approximately Rs 230), $2.99 in Costa Rica (approximately s 230), and PEN 7.9 (approximately Rs 160) in Peru.
