Ner Ethir Review

Thrillers are the order of the day, and here's another aimed at belonging to that pack. Thread of story here is weaved around not murder or money matters, but cheating and breach of trust. Jayapradeep, who was formerly an associate of Keyar, launches himself with new and fairly familiar faces.

Most of the story is set in a hotel where the breach comes to fore. Kathir (Parthy) and Isha (Aishwarya) are engaged to be married soon. But Isha has not quite chummed up to the idea of living just for Kathir. Isha has an affair with Kathir's best buddy, Karthik (Richard), and calls him one last time to end it all. But the mess begins to unfold as Kathir discovers only at this penultimate moment that he has been cheated, and stalks Isha to find out who her secret man is. Having lied manifold, Kathir brings Karthik into the plan and lays down a plot for revenge. What he succeeds at forms rest of the story.

Among all the many offbeat stories, 'Ner Ethir' is short narrative, which can be told concisely in even a couple of lines, and thus makes for a film no longer than two hours. For such stories, screenplay is of utmost importance, which here, to say the least, is unsatisfactory. Most of the story is revealed in the first few frames already. The little portion which does get missed is highly predictable, making it a rather uninteresting experience. Quite many scenes are repetitive, in an effort to over explain the story which is already in place. Dialogues seem to only drag the movie further, in most places, than arrive at a point. Given that these technicalities are not in place, overall acting takes a hit, appearing to drag the script with unnecessary gestures. Music and score is monotonous and songs only deter the dull screenplay. One relief is the occasional presence of MS Bhaskar as Neeravi, his quirky history and his funny attempts to be a good receptionist and house keeping staff. However, comedy does not succeed in its effort to make you laugh.

However, cinematography and art direction takes the spotlight on being appreciative. Most of the story is narrated inside a single room, and Rasamathi deserves a special mention for his artistic cinematography. Overall, 'Ner Ethir' is an aptly titled gripping story which is not quite narrated that way.
