Nehru Park-Central Metro Rail service to commence from March

In yet another addition to the increasing number of modes of transport to the denizens of Chennai, the Chennai Metro Rail Corporation (CMRC) has announced that the under-ground Metro Rail services linking Nehru Park to Chennai Cenrtal Railway Station would commence from March this year.

"Laying rail-tracks and signal networks have been completed and we hope to start plying regular under-ground Metro rail services from March onwards," a top CMRC official said yesterday.

Work is also on at Stations at Tondiarpet, Korukkupet, Sir Theagaraya College, Gauri Ashram, Thangal, Toll Gate and Tiruvotriyur, it has been intimated. Work is also going on full-swing at rest of the Stations including laying rail-tracks, staircase and other communication networks.

"We would soon have a trial run on the sector Nehru Park-Chennai Central after which Rail Safety Commissioner would review the arrangements put in place. We hope to commence services in the sector from March," he said and added that the Wimco Nagar-Washermenpet sector would have Metro Rails from next year.
