Recently, 'Bhaagamathie' became the first South Indian female-oriented movie to enter the Rs. 50 crore (gross) club. The film was a flop in Tamil, but it still has the distinction of bettering many opening records.
As per a trade analysis, in Tamil Nadu, this is how the different female-oriented movies have opened on Day 1.
Jyothika-starrer 'Naachiyaar', released recently, made Rs. 1.64 crore. This record is followed by that of 'Bhaagamathie', which opened to a huge Rs. 1.55 crore. Nayanthara's 'Aramm' made Rs. 1.50 crore, while Jyothika's 'Magalir Mattum' made Rs. 1.30 crore. 'Rudhramadevi' did a Day 1 business of Rs. 1.25 crore. Nayan's horror 'Maya' made Rs. 1 crore. 'Irudhi Suttru' did Rs. 0.91 crore, while 'Dora', another of Nayan's horror films, made Rs. 0.89 crore.
It may be inferred that Telugu cinema is behind Kollywood in churning out heroine-centric movies.
