Punjab Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, who grabbed headlines for political reasons ahead of the Assembly elections to Punjab Assembly earlier this year, is in the news for a wrong reason. On Thursday, the Supreme Court sentenced the former cricketer to one year in jail in a road rage case that took place in 1988.
The 58-year-old politician and his supporters are shocked at the rigorous imprisonment that has been handed over to him.
In a statement, Sidhu said that he will submit to the majesty of the law.
Earlier, Sidhu was let off with a mere fine. A review plea was later filed by the family of the victim of the road rage. After the review, the quantum of punishment awarded to Sidhu was reviewed.
Sidhu will reportedly be put in the same Patiala jail where his political rival Bikram Majithia is lodged.
Commenting on the sentence, columnist Aditya Mennon wrote, "Tough luck for Navjot Sidhu. But this may be a chance for him to reinvent himself. Public negativity due to his unpredictable behaviour may become thing of the past by the time sentence ends."
