Actor-writer Tanikella Bharani in this interview says that Sumanth's November 4 release is both entertaining and emotional (in the climax). Catch him talk about other things as well.
Do you think the audience will warm up to this bold subject?
When I watched 'Vicky Donor', I was shocked. I wondered if it is plausible to be remade into Telugu. Times have changed. There was a time when people would open their mouth in shock at someone consuming alcohol. Today, they are surprised when someone doesn't drink. 'Naruda DONORuda' deals with a sensitive subject. While being entertaining, it also lets emotions run high in the climax. Usually, remakes are not done most faithfully. In this case, but for small changes, they have made it as it is. That's why I think it will be a success.
As an experienced writer, did you offer advices to the director?
If anything, I only proffered small advices. The writers have done a very good job and I had nothing to set right.
Why have you called this film the starting point of your second innings?
After so many years, I have donned a role substantial in importance vis-a-vis the hero. I played such an important role in 'Yama Leela' and 'Mahalakshmi Recording Dance'. After this movie, I am expecting to get to play 4-5 more good roles. That's why 'Naruda DONORuda' is my second innings.
Do you think the audience are going to accept you in the role of an infertility specialist?
The audience accepted me in venal roles. Since I have done this job with focus, they will definitely reward me.
In your career spanning 300 movies, you have been seen in a single scene roles as well. Do you have reservations when doing such trivial roles?
Even if it is a single scene, I wouldn't do a film if I don't like the scene. I shot for 'Athadu' for just 4 days. Look how popular my line 'Aadu magadra bujji' became! A film itself was titled on this line. Since I have been in the industry for so many years, I may sometimes have to do only a scene. I take even that single scene as a challenge because it was offered to me with respect.
What change have you observed in Sumanth?
I have acted with all the actors of the Akkineni family. This time, I have observed Sumanth take everything upon himself. I was reminded of the days of 'Ladies Tailor'. This film unveils a new side to him.
How has this movie changed you as a person?
I now know the pain of those who have no children. It has been seven years since a friend of mine hasn't had children. The other day, he told me how he unselfconsciously starts staring whenever he crosses paths with children. Earlier, I would not understand this emotion. But after doing this film, I can empathize with their pain.
We are told you did advice a title. What was that?
I suggested 'Telugu Veera Levara', but they didn't like it.
As a writer, what is your take on the state of writers today?
Writers of late are not getting their due. Do you see their names on posters? Why is it that they see only Paruchuri Brothers? The likes of Trivikram Srinivas have elevated the status of the writer in their own way.
What are you up to?
I am writing the story of 'Bhaktha Kannappa'. I am not directing it.
