Ahead of the release of 'Krishnarjuna Yuddham' on April 12, Nani says that the film is different compared to other dual role entertainers. Catch him talk about various other topics.
You have done dual roles in the past. How different is 'KAY' from them, apart from the genre?
Usually, dual role films see an encounter between the two similar-looking characters in just one or two scenes. In 'KAY', Krishna and Arjun travel half the running time. And their personalities are such a contrast to each other. If Arjun is a rock star from Prague, Krishna is a relatable guy from Chittoor. There is a Krishna in all of us. The audience will be thrilled to watch the two characters in one frame.
Films like 'Hello Brother' are in the typical commercial mould. 'KAY' is different in that Krishna and Arjun are not twins. There is no revenge formula. There is no backstory involving them. It's just a coincidence that they look alike. There is a war between them and by them. I think Krishna has an edge over Arjun in stealing the audience's hearts. 'Dhaari Choodu' song has already become such a big hit.
The film's run-time is 158 minutes, the first half alone being 90 minutes. But you won't find it lengthy.
How difficult was it to do the Chittoor slang?
We have seen a number of Telugu movies in which the Telangana slang is spoken by a villain or some other character and it's not authentic either. But my experience with my Hyderabadi friends told me long back that the T slang is different. I had decided back then that, if and when I become an actor, I shouldn't at least murder Telugu. When Merlapaka Gandhi came to me with 'KAY', he had written the script in the required language. I had my doubts on the first two days of the shoot. From the third day, it was easy. Gandhi and my fellow actor Mahesh Vitta too are from Chittoor region. Mahesh will become a highlight.
It has been rumored that some scenes had to be reshot. Is it true?
The best thing about Gandhi is that he is very clear-minded. Whatever he writes, that is what is shot. There were no reshoots at all. These are concocted controversies.
How was it working with Anupama and Rukshar Dhillon?
Anupama is a nice performer. She has a magical chemistry with the camera. When I would see her acting directly, I would find it is ordinary. However, in the monitor, her performance is something else. Very few actors are like this. As for Rukshar, she made it a point to learn the pronunciation of the words. Her dedication will take her a long way.
Why Hiphop Tamizha?
I had heard a Tamil song composed by him long back. When the audio of 'Dhruva' was out, I found each and every song very good. It was Gandhi's choice too to rope him in.
It's not like 'MCA' was a great film. But it was a blockbuster. How?
I think the audience has a soft corner towards me. They forgive my mistakes. That said, had it achieved just breakeven, it might have been explained away as the result of my image. However, it was a very, very big hit. There is something in the film which you haven't seen.
You are on the verge of delivering another hit, it seems. Meanwhile, you seem to have raised your remuneration a lot?
The first thing I tell myself when I buy a car is that I will have a bike to ride if I will sell my car someday. One can't give hits perennially. This is not permanent. As for remuneration, if I were to charge the same Rs. 90,000 as I did to do 'Ashta Chamma', everybody will be after me. My fee has increased without my involvement. All that matters to me is satisfaction. I would feel sad if I continue to act the way I did in 'Pilla Jamindar'.
How has your experience with Wall Poster Cinema been?
I would say that 'AWE' is the film of the year because it not only got critical acclaim but also made me, the producer, very happy. The idea is to introduce new directors and artists through Wall Poster Cinema. Telugu film industry has made me someone. I was a useless fellow before. Through my banner, I have to give back something to it.
When are you doing Tamil again?
In the case of Tamil, I don't know the language and so, it becomes hard to improvise. I wouldn't know how to add magic to my performance. I would have to rote-learn the dialogue there.
'KAY' will face competition from 'Bharat Ane Nenu'. Isn't it?
The way I see it, it's good when few good films play in the town at the same time. After 'Baahubali', people started coming to theatres expecting good films. So, many other films benefited from its success. I am happy for 'Rangasthalam'. And I wish 'BAN' a blockbuster.
Apart from the multi-starrer with Nagarjuna, what other films are you doing? Is it true that you are going to do Siva Nirvana's next film?
About 5-6 scripts are in various stages. I myself don't know which of them will go on the floors first. They have been okayed as ideas. I haven't met Siva since 'Ninnu Kori'.
