The Govt. of India's 'Hydrocarbon project' at Neduvasal in Pudukkottai district is being vehemently opposed by villagers, environmentalists, students and many considering the huge blow it causes to the farmers, let alone the environmental damage it poses.
The South Indian Artistes' Association has released a statement regarding the issue for the public's perusal.
Here is a gist of what the letter reads:
" 'The 'Hydrocarbon Project' set to take place in the districts of Pudukkottai and Thanjavur by the Central Govt. has seen great opposition from the people.
Although claimed for the betterment of the nation, no measure will be welcomed if it destroys harvest and poses a damage to the farmers. Such projects need to be explained thoroughly to the locals and get their consent before implementation.
We at Nadigar Sangam will always be there to support the feelings and aspirations of the people. This project should be immediately dropped by the Union Govt., considering the voices of the people & Govt. of TN."
Also, in a recent audio launch function, Nadigar Sangam's General Secretary & actor Vishal had declared that he will join the protest in support of the farmers.
